Pupils at Richard de Clare Community Academy in Halstead enjoyed an engaging and interactive day of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) thanks to a collaborative initiative between Braintree District Council and CSES.
The special STEM event, held on Thursday 4 June, gave students the opportunity to take part in a series of hands-on workshops designed to demonstrate how STEM subjects are applied in professional careers.
Volunteers from CSES delivered the sessions, bringing STEM concepts to life through practical challenges and demonstrations.
Activities included protecting an egg dropped from height, building a bridge capable of supporting several kilograms using only a few pieces of paper and constructing load bearing towers from spaghetti and marshmallows.
The activities tested the students’ imagination and problem solving skills while exploring key engineering principles. While fun and engaging, the activities reflected real life engineering applications – from space craft recovery design to the construction of buildings and bridges.
The initiative aims to inspire young people to consider the wide range of rewarding career opportunities available through STEM subjects.
Cllr Justin Wrench, Cabinet Member for Economic Growth at Braintree District Council, said: "It was fantastic to see students so engaged and enthusiastic throughout the day. Activities like these not only make learning fun but also help young people understand how STEM subjects connect to exciting real-world careers. We’re proud to support initiatives that inspire the next generation and open their eyes to the opportunities available to them."
