Welcome to our new season
We invite you to join us at Anglia Ruskin University for our new season of FREE evening lectures.
Our social calendar kicks off with a gathering on October 29th and then a Christmas get-together on December 10th. Please book your places via the event links – dates for 2027 will be published shortly.
We will also be taking part in the Chelmsford Science Festival, including the ever-popular Family Weekend and a gaming industry careers event for schools.
This year, our (ever-expanding!) programme of Christmas Lectures for schools includes talks on unsolved maths problems, the ice age and aliens.
Read on for further details of the evening talks.
September 23rd – The Paranormal. Most of us “know” that ghosts do not exist, that aliens have not contacted Earth, and that we do not possess psychic powers, yet a majority of people still believe that paranormal phenomena do occur. How can science explain this dichotomy?
October 21st – The Common Cold. The first cold virus was detected in a milk tooth shed over 30,000 years ago and, ever since, the common cold has been a bane. Yet the processes that lead to them are not widely known and often misunderstood – until now. Part of the Chelmsford Science Festival.
November 18th – Lasers. As children we might have seen lasers as weapons in futuristic science fiction! Today, industrial laser systems offer unparalleled capabilities in advanced materials processing and precision manufacturing. Not as exciting, maybe, but far more interesting. The CSES AGM will follow this talk.
December 16th – Antarctica. We might be dreaming of a White Christmas but in Antarctica it will be high Summer with temperatures as high as a balmy eight degrees. What is it like to live and work in the coldest continent on Earth? and what wonders can be found there?
January 20th – Medical Robots. A huge fear, but a reality, for many of us is that at some point we will need to undergo surgery. When we do, we will rely on the skill and experience of a highly qualified surgeon – but what if one is not available? Can robots share the load?
February 17th – High Energy Physics. If particle physics, rare decays, and beauty hadrons are your cup of tea then we have the perfect speaker for you. He is a member of the LHCb experiment at CERN and Public Physicist at the Cavendish Lab in Cambridge.
March 17th – Photography. For 5,000 consecutive days one man posted a photograph online that he had taken in and around his home city and in doing so gained a following around the world. Come and hear about, and see, the results of this labour of love.
April 21st – Radiotherapy. How does high energy radiation both cause and cure cancer? What role does Chelmsford play in the field of Radiotherapy and how was the technology developed in both wartime and peacetime?
May 19th – Space. How can astronomers research the origins of the universe and explain what happened 13 billion years ago? Our speaker in May is, aptly, a rising star in her field and having completed her PhD is paying a return visit to tell us more about her work.

All welcome, always FREE, refreshments included.
