My Smarter Essex, which took place on 6 October 2016 at Anglia Ruskin University, included a number of real-time, interactive polls that gathered the audience's opinions on some of the issues raised during the presentations. This was in addition to the free-form questions and comments submitted by those who attended.
We can confirm that 125 people took part in the polls, and their responses – along with our commentary – is now available.
The photos from My Smarter Essex, held on Thursday 6 October 2016 at Anglia Ruskin University, are now available.
Thank you to everyone who attended and who made the event such a success. This is just the start of a major project; more to follow...
We were pleased to present a bursary cheque to Thurstable School following a successful application for funding for an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) requiring some specific materials.

Over the years illumination in houses has become more efficient. This has been achieved in three ways:
- The light emission medium generates more lumens (light) per watt (unit of power).
- The light emission spectrum better matches that of the eye receptors.
- The luminaire (the overall fixture) has become more efficient at directing light to its desired place.

Congratulations to Jason Kent who, as the best-performing student in Mechanical Engineering BEng (Hons) at Anglia Ruskin University, claimed this year's CSES Award. Jason's commendable engagement in his study has been admired both by the ARU teaching staff and his peers. We look forward to seeing what the future holds for you, Jason!
CSES sponsors an award made to the most promising student in BSc/BEng (Hons) Engineering each year. The 2015/16 award was presented to Jason by Vic Leverett, CSES Vice President at a ceremony held at Anglia Ruskin University on 12 October 2016.

Greensward Academy launched a STEM club in 2015, aided by £500 of STEM Club Bursary seed funding from CSES. This grant enabled 110 students from years 7 and 8 to participate the 2015 UKMT Junior Maths Challenge. We are delighted to report that the group achieved 8 silver and 19 bronze awards at national level.
We awarded a further £500 in 2016 to enable the nascent STEM club to grow. This money was used to fund various projects including a hydroelectric power generator, which was presented at our 2016 Schools' Competition and won the £200 STEM Club Award.
So after two years and a total of £1200 of STEM Club Bursary funding, Greensward Academy has a thriving STEM Club that continues to grow and with which we will continue to be involved. This is an excellent example of how the STEM Club Bursary can help a school to start and evolve a STEM Club, and we hope that this encourages other schools to apply.
